The museum was founded by the historian, teacher, sculptor, and defender of the artistic heritage, Frederic Marès (1893-1991). This collection was given as a contribution to the City of Barcelona by him. It is considered the most important selection of Hispanic sculpture from the 12th to the 19th centuries in Spain. The collection contains many objects like dolls, ironwork, pipes and fans of the 19th centuriy as well as a huge sculpture section from pre-Roman time to the 20th Century and sculptures by Frederic Marès himself. You will also find an interesting gathering of furnishings, paintings and metalwork.
